    The Brazilian born Júlio Caliman is an accomplished guitar player who can play different styles from jazz to rock, passing through several Brazilian rhythms. He holds a Bachelor and a Master’s Degree in Music from Unicamp (State University of Campinas), one of the top universities in Latin America.

     From 2008 to 2010 he lived in the Chicago area, while pursuing a Performer’s Certificate in Jazz from NIU (Northern Illinois University) where he studied with Fareed Haque, Ronald Carter, Willie Pickens, Rodrigo Villanueva, among others. During that period, he played in many cities throughout the USA and Mexico with artists such as Lewis Nash, John Fedchock, Don Braden, Willie Pickens, Carl Allen, Russel Gunn, Reggie Thomas, Allen Vizzuti, Stefan Karlson, Rodrigo Villanueva and NIU Jazz Ensemble. At NIU, he was also a Graduate Assistant, as member of the Liberace Sextet.

     Back in Brazil in 2010, he was sideman with many artists, including Eduardo Araújo, Fábio Jr., Luiza Possi, Wanderleia, Pedro Mariano and Wanessa Camargo. With the later, he was part of the 2012-13 “DNA” tour, recording a DVD and playing in many cities in Brazil and in Luanda, Angola.  

     His first CD, “Tão Longe, So far away…”, was released in Brazil in 2008, sponsored by the Brazilian government and has received good reviews from the Brazilian press.

      Since 2011 he’s been teaching at Unisant’anna College in São Paulo city, being responsible for courses such as Harmony, Improvisation, Arranging, Jazz History, Brazilian Music History and Guitar Studio.
